Govt officials who slack off are not needed: Shahbaz
* Punjab CM rejects proposal to increase water tariff
Staff Report
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif has ordered the removal of all heads of development agencies, who had failed to provide civic amenities, despite being provided all necessary resources.
According to a handout issued on Wednesday, the CM issued these directions in a high-level meeting in Gujranwala. He said government employees who were unaware of the people’s problems and the city’s developmental needs had no right to retain their offices.
Shahbaz said every rupee allocated for development was “the nation’s trust”, adding that the provincial government would not let the funds be embezzled by corrupt officials and contractors.
He said there would be no shortage of funds for free education, potable water and other facilities throughout the province, adding that there would be no compromise on the standard and pace of development work. He said “there was nothing worse than officers taking huge salaries and incentives from the government exchequer and still being unaware about the works being carried out by their departments”.
No increase: Rejecting a proposal by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to increase the charges levied on water, the CM said the agency should first improve running water and drainage facilities. He also announced a grant of Rs 50 million for WASA to facilitate its development projects.
